Hyderabad Food Places- GouRMEt HoNoRs

Hyderabad Food Places - GouRMEt HoNoRs...

If you ask me one good reason why somebody should come to hyderabad, it would definetely be for the food. I have been living all my life over here(except 4 yrs of grad) but I still dont get bored of the food here. So a mention of all the places that have kept me healthy and satiated all these years is worth the effort . Mind you, these are not places I rated based on ambience, service or their intrusion into the pockets. Only one criterion-TASTE.

BIRYANI

Talk about Hyderabad and the first thing that comes to mind is Biryani. There have been lot of contests and debates over which is the best biryani house but my personal favourite is Bawarchi. It has never disappointed me in all my innumerable visits. Need I say more???.

Where: RTC cross roads, just beside the chowrastha.

Also worth a mention: Paradise in Secunderabad ( just for trivia:the owner Ali is a vegetarian ), 4-seasons in Tolichowki,Yatri-Nivas in Begumpet

CHAT

If you consider eating pani puri on a bandi as unhygenic you can skip this part. For chat in hyderabad, Maharaja Chat Bandar is a hot favorite. Ask anybody in jubilee hills and the surrounding areas about Chat and they will be chanting Maharaja. It has already moved three places but has always had its loyalists following its trail. If you are still not convinced check out the community ‘maharaja chat bandar’ on orkut and you will know what I am talking about.

Where: On the road leading to madhapur from jubilee hills, opposite Orchids School

Also worth a mention : Gokul Chat in koti, Hanuman chat bandar in kundanbag and Dimmy’s in Sindhi colony

CHAI (a.k.a Tea)

Hyderabadis love their chai. No wonder you will find a cafe( read kayyff) in every other gully of hyderabad. The eternal combination of irani chai and osmania biskoot is bread and butter for most hyderabadis. Immortalised by the old city style, cafes provides for the best hangouts if ambience is not on your priority. My pick for this category is Madina Cafe in old city.

Where: Pretty close to Charminar, the circle is famous for the cafe and it is called Madina. So just ask.

Also worth a mention : Limrah in Tolichowki, Sarvee in banjara hills(opposite care hospital) , Gaffoor bhai’s chai on road no.10,banjara hills(all through the night)

HALEEM

A Hyderabadi exclusivity!!! only made during the time of Ramzan. This mutton delicacy is high on nutrition and very filling for the appetite. No wonder muslims feast on it when they break their fast in the holy month of Ramzan. This is one good reason for non muslims to await Ramzan and celebrate it in style . My pick for the best Haleem in town is 555 cafe but if hygiene is high on your priority then Pista House.

Where: 555 is near masab tank chowrastha and Pista house is in charminar.(not to worry,it opens its outlets in every gully of hyd)

Also worth a mention : Sarvee in banjara hills, hyderabad house and all the major biryani houses.

ICE CREAM

Ice cream is omnipresent and so is Ohris in hyderabad. For many Hyderabadis like me icecream is synonymous with Ohris. This chain of restaurants started with the name of Havmor offering gourmet sundaes and now it has become a house hold name. It has some signature sundaes which are sinfully awesome. For an icecreamoholic like me,it is a second home. Do try when at ohris- lewinsky, bulls eye and titanic (the biggest sundae in hyderabad).

where: basheerbagh, banjara hills road no.12,prasads,hyderabad central, necklace road.

Also worth a mention : Famous ice cream in mozamjahi market( try all the flavors there and still it wont cost you more than a hundred bucks),amore in eatstreet and madhapur, the kwality walls bandis late in the nite on the empty roads of hyderabad.

CHINESE

Authentic chinese would not go very well with the spice loving Hyderabadis. But there are a lot of places which have incorporated the Hyderabadi flavor. So when you look for good chinese places in Hyderabad don’t be surprised if you don’t find them very authentic. One such place which is an all time favorite among most people is Naan King. It is worth your money and more. Do try the chicken drumsticks there.

Where: Secunderabad, next lane to paradise junction

Also worth a mention : Mainland China in Banjara hills, Ming’s court in ohri’s basheer bagh,Chopsticks in srinagar colony( good for takeaway)

BAKERIES

Mcdonalds, kfcs and pizza huts aside there are a lot of good bakeries which offer good burgers in Hyderabad. The local burgers before the advent of the multi national chains tasted much better. The idea of burger was a lot different and lot better before the advent of mcdonalds. For me a filling burger is the one you get in Universal Bakers. For that matter most of the close-to-home bakeries serve customised junk for local needs.:) If veg pizzas is some thing you are looking for, Pizza den is the place. It is not this hi fi place with waiters doing huddles but it just serves good pizzas. Vac’s pastry house serves some awesome pastries which just melt in the mouth.

Where: Universal bakers in himayath nagar and secunderabad, pizza den and vac’s in thirumalgerry

Also worth a mention: Bakers INN in somajiguda, Midways in banjara hills,Bigbite in srinagar colony

ANDHRA FOOD

The list would be incomplete if I did not mention the traditional andhra food places. I have not been to a lot of these( don’t blame me, I live with my parents) but of the ones I have visited I found Annalakshmi the best. Not a very famous place but I found it had the essentials of a complete andhra meal. Swagath is another hotel which serves very good south Indian tiffins.

Where: Both of them are in Ameerpet( I wouldnt go farther for these I guess)

Also worth a mention: Minerva coffee shop in a lot of places, Chutneys in panjagutta, Spicy venue in jubilee hills.

BUFFETS

For the ideal gourmets, nothing like it. A good spread at reasonable cost and of course good taste is what I would be looking at. There are a lot of places offering buffets at lunch time for very reasonable rates. But I found the most exhaustive spread at Indijoe’s. For me,it is the first place that comes to mind when I am really really hungry and have the appetite to eat a lot.

Where: In city centre mall( do try the other restaurants of bjn group on the same floor)

Also worth a mention: Angeethi in banjara hills, Barbeque nation opposite city centre, If it is late in the nite and you are hungry then OHRIS BANJARA midnite buffet- you may find me there waiting for a place to sit

Caution: All the above are my personal preferences. Extremely addictive, try at your own risk!!!!!

Hyderabadi Irani Chai ( Tea )

Hyderabadi Irani Chai.... ( Tea)

uuuuummmmmaaaaaahhhhh...

What is Coke to America, Irani Chai is to Hyderabad.

Next to Pearls, Hyderabad is synonymous with Hyderbadi Irani Tea, locally called Chai, thanks mainly to the Iranians who have set up Tea Cafes in almost each and every Galli (Bylane) of Hyderabad.

It is not 5 star restaurants, it is not banquet halls, and it is not the posh lunch tables, but it is the Irani Cafes where many business meetings are held over a cup of Tea. Visit any Irani Cafe and you can invariably find groups of people rich or poor discussing everything under the Sun and even about the tasty Tea they are having at that moment.

Maybe in no other city of India would you find so many Irani Cafes like the ones springing up in Hyderabad. Another notable feature is that almost every Irani Cafe has got a small cabin outside just attached to the Cafe which is more famously called as 'Paan Dabba', where people after having tea will buy a Cigarette or a 'Paan' (Betel leaves on which the Paan specialists mix many different eatables substances to get many distinct flavors).

And last but not the least, if you happen to go past an Irani Cafe with your friends for the first time, please don't forget to taste the Hyderabadi Tea and also don't forget to ask for a 1/2 Chai, which is a True Hyderabadi Tradition and Hospitality. So, try our Hyderabadi Chai and with it you will discover the Vigor, the Vitality, and the Friendly faces of Hyderabad.

Best combinations to have with Irani chai are:

Osmania Biscuits

Chota Samosa

Aloo Samosa

Dilpasand

Telangana... Why Telangana?

Telangana... Why Telangana?

Whenever the topic of Telangana is raised, many of us blindly support Andhra or Telangana based on where we come from. Not sure how many really think of why the demand for separate state has been there for such a long time. The 2 major reasons why the demand has been pending for so many years is WATER AND HYDERBAD. People around the state have earned and invested in and around Hyderabad so there is a concerns about the safety of the investment if the state is separated while both the major rivers in our state flow mostly through Telangana. Below are some facts that are few reasons for the demand. Sentiments can be foolish but not facts.

1]   There are 10 districts in Telangana, 9 in Andhra and 4 in Rayalaseema. Out of these 7 districts in Telangana, 3 in Andhra and 1 in Rayalaseema are considered severely backward districts which means 70% of districts in Telangana are backward while in Andhra it is 35% and in Rayalaseema it is 25%. Apart from these there are some areas in all parts of the state which are also backward.

2]    45% of the state income comes from Telangana region. When it comes to utilization of funds, the share of Telangana is only 28%.

3]    Normally canals are dug to supply water to the crops from rivers for cultivation. The amount of land cultivated through canals in just Guntur district is more than the land cultivated with canals in entire Telangana region.

4]    Nagarjuna sagar dam is built in Nalgonda district which is in Telangana but majority of the water from the dam is used for Krishna and Guntur district. The original dam was supposed to be build much ahead of its present location but the location was changed so that it falls in the Telangana region. Due to the construction of the dam several hectares of Lime stone mines vanished as part of the dam back waters. Everyone know that lime stone is used for producing cement. Even the natural resources were not allowed to remain.

5]     Fluorinated water problem is only in Nalgonda district which has not been resolved since decades.

6]     Two major rivers Krishna and Tungabhadra enter the state of AP in the district of Mahaboobnagar(the biggest district in Telangana) but the district always remains the worst draught hit areas along with Anantapur because there is no project and process with which the water can be utilized. The plans for utilization has been pending for decades.

7]     RDS (Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme) is build in Mahaboobnagar to provide water to 85000 hectares of land in the district. The leaders of Rayalaseems blasted the gates of RDS and water is supplied to KC (Kurnool-Cudapah) canal while only remaining water, if any, is supplied to the lands in Mahaboobnagar.

8]     3 TMC of water from Gandipet is sufficient to supply drinking water to our city. Every year 1700 TMC of water is wasted and is flown into Bay of Bengal from river Godavari. Starting from Nizambad to Bay of Bengal there is no project allowed to build on Godavari. If it is built leaders in Godavari districts fear that the fertile lands in the area may fall short of water. If the Godavari water is utilized properly, there will be no scarcity for food grains in our state.

9]      In Telangana regions, only few areas cultivate one crop a year and very rarely two crops a year while most of the land doesn’t even cultivate single crop. In both the Godavari districts, Krishna and Guntur district, two crops a year is common and there are times where even 3 crops a year are cultivated. The only reason is WATER.

10]     Government issue G.O.’s for implicating its decisions. G.O number 610 is the longest non implicated G.O in the history of AP. The G.O was issued in 1986 by late NTR who was then the CM of AP, which is not yet implicated. The G.O speaks about the share of Telangana employees in Government jobs in Telangana region.

11]     33% of the population in Mahaboobnagar district have left the district for livelihood to different parts of the state due to draught and majority of them are working as daily labour. No other district has so many people who fled the home place due to lack of livelihood and working as daily labour.

12]     There are 25 plus government degree colleges in Krishna, Kadapa and Guntur district while there is not even a single government degree college in Ranga Reddy district.

13]      Dairy development corporation of AP purchases milk from farmers across the state for distribution. For the same milk, in Andhra, the government pay Rs. 24 to the farmers and in Telangana they pay Rs. 22 per litre. Partiality is shown even in milk J

14]      In between 2005-2008 government sold lands worth Rs. 20000 crores in and around Hyderabad which was utilized to build projects in Rayalaseema and Andhra.

15]      Not even a single project was completed in Telangana in the last 5 years while several projects were completed in Andhra and Rayalaseema.

Naldurg Fort

Naldurg Fort..

Naldurg Fort is situated at Naldurg, about 40 km east of Solapur, in Osmanabad District, Maharashtra. This imposing structure contains some fabulous examples of early Indo-Islamic architecture. Naldurg Fort is an architectural marvel and the ‘Pani Mahal’, constructed below water, attracts tourists and researchers alike.

The interior portion of the fort is enclosed within ruined walls. There are many bastions in the fort. The Upli Buruj is the highest point in the fort. There are several buildings in the fort which are now in ruins. The dam constructed across the Boru River which connects the fort and the Ranamandala, is worth visiting. The dam and the Pani Mahal were constructed during the reign of Ibrahim Adil Shah II.

The nearest airport is at Pune. Solapur Junction Railway Station is the nearest access point.

Naldurg fort..

Naldurg itself is situated in Osmanabad district (named after the Ottomans) in what is now a state called Maharashtra, India. Though its fortifications are impressive and the fort itself contains some fabulous examples of early Indo-Islamic architecture, it is practically unheard of, even in Maharashtra, or in the surrounding states, which have no shortage of spectacular forts or forgotten histories.
